The Last Wish

Some Love Stories are meant to be etched in our hearts forever. Whatever their age may be their love remains strong and new as the morning dew. Some of the people I have met inspired me to write this short story cherishing the moments they share in their old young age. None of them has crossed their 50’s yet I wish like a small kid that the following story would be part of their fairytale.

The story of an old ordinary couple exuberating the tale of extraordinary love. The old man crossing his late 70’s, feeble and quite long. Supported by his long wooden walking sticks he carries on his work at a snail’s pace. He has a flake of wrinkles covering his face and callous of muscles donning his entire body. The beautiful old lady, feeble and marked with wrinkles. Old age has caught up with her yet her grace and elegance never left. The serenity on her face is her only makeup yet it illuminates the hearts of many. They both live in a home constructed by their memories and love. The home stands strong to tell their tale of perseverances and struggles, tests and tribulations, cheerful and desolate times. The story of an old couple about their powerful weapon in life, true love.

Uncertain when death will knock at their doorstep and separate them from their earthly abode and union, they spent their lives in quiet and tranquil manner. The same old monotonous routine they follow every day without speaking a word. Their hearts have been one for ages and did not get corrupt with the dust of this world. One uniquely strange ritual they follow ever since they have fallen in love with each other. They write their thoughts about each other in a most eloquent manner, weaving the magic of words flowing from their hearts and mind inked with their commitment. In the drawing room lies two big boards supported by antique wall hanger. Boards were the world of their thoughts pinned with subtle care. Every month they would take out time from their busy schedules and make a handcrafted box to safely secure the romantic words of their beloved. One particular piece of art remains to the core of their hearts, the portrait of “The Romantic Tryst”. Wooden framed and neatly kept portrait gifted to them by a very good friend of theirs, capturing the first moment of their romantic bliss. The moment is still as fresh in the soul as if it was yesterday only.

The description of the “The Romantic tryst” is as follows, the image of the dark blanket of sky covered with small dots of shiny bright stars. Near the shore, there lies a bench facing the vast sea.The bench is near the street post illuminated by the halogen bulb strong enough to the brighten the bench. On the bench, sat the two young couples gazing at the vast sea of nothingness and the dark sky of hope. The male entity resting his left arm on the shoulder of the female entity while the female comforts her head on the man’s shoulder. The still wind freezes the moment and their hearts beating in a synchronised manner.

One particular month, the old woman noticed that the board that was used by the old man is empty while her board was always filled with something inspirational and romantic. She inquired with the old man, “Hey Honey! Why aren’t you writing anything more for me? You know that I always love the way you write about me. What happened?” The old man frowned his face and replied in ghastly voice, “Dear I can’t write anymore. Seems age is catching up with me and I simply can’t express myself with words now. I tried in vain.” The gloomy face on her husband made her sad. The old man contemplated, all these years the greatest tool that he had was his words and today that tool is fading away in darkness. She came close to him, hugged him and kissed his forehead. “Don’t worry honey! it’s alright. My eyes are weak therefore I can’t read what you write so leave It.”, she replied in a loving manner. Few days passed by, the old man didn’t come out of his room. One fine day, He came to fetch water for his thirsty throat. He noticed something was pinned on his side of the board. He adjusted his spectacles and focused on the small piece of red note dangling on his board. He read the note in his coarse voice, “Dear, even if my words are lost in the valley of my age, I will still love u for eternity. Your Love.” The old man was overwhelmed and went quickly to his old wife. He hugged her passionately. With teary and loving eyes he looked at her and said, “Every single day you never cease to mesmerise me. Today you wrote in words the feelings of my heart which I failed to write all these days. I LOVE YOU, my Love.” The fire of love within them grew stronger like a wildfire of the forest.

The month came to an end. The season was changing and spring was welcomed in the small town. The old couple were living at their pace. One day, the old man requested his wife to pack some lunch and bed sheets as we are going for a picnic. The old woman was taken aback by this impromptu request as it’s been ages that they went out together. She hesitatingly agreed and packed the things. It was noon and the sun was at its worst in this part of the world. The old couple opened their front door and stepped outside to greet the world they have forgotten. As a customary ritual, the old man had to wrap his wife with the shawl, hold her hands and walk wherever they went. And today it was no different, the old man followed the rituals very devotionally. They went to the nearby park, climbed a small hill and sat beneath a cool shade of the banyan tree. They sat on the bench provided, just like the picturesque view of “The Romantic tryst”. Out of the curiosity, the old woman asked, “Why of all a sudden we have come to this park?” The old man was silent. He stood up and hang the bed sheet in front of them via the branches of the tree. The bed sheet was white in colour and hanging in front of them just like a projector sheet. He clapped his hands indicating someone far by to bring the machine to the bench. The machine was a projector machine with a strip of film hanging by the side. He thanked the friendly guy and bid him goodbye. He turned his attention to his wife. Before he could say anything, there were tears in eyes and joy on her face. She realised what her husband is doing. He turned on the projector and sat next to his beloved wife. At the very moment, she opened her purse took out her old adventure scrapbook. The last page of the book displayed in bold letters, “My last wish: when I am old, the one who loves me would take me to serene spot. I lay to rest in his arms and him in mine while we watch the reminiscence of our love story being projected like a movie from the projector.” The old woman looked up at him and smiled. He murmured into her ears, “Your wish is a command to me, my love”. Just as she wished, they sat together and watched in the silence of their hearts the movie of their unending love.

A walk by the beach

Girl: It’s been long time since we both went on a walk. May we go today?

Boy: (smiled) Yes Sure! I was also thinking on the same lines. But where would we go? All the places are either crowded or not safe enough.

Girl: You are my safe haven. Take me wherever you want us to go. I trust you. Surprise me like you did on our first date.

Boy: Umm! Let’s see. Hmm!!! Where we can go.

(A long thoughtful pause)

Boy: I know a perfect place where we can go on a walk.

Girl: I am excited. Let’s go now. Why wait.

Narrator: Boy laughed and went inside. He came after a while dressed in his tracked suits and with a shawl in his hands.

Boy: I am ready. Also as per our customary tradition, I have brought shawl for you. (Passed a smile at the girl and extended his hands towards in order to take her to the walk).

Narrator: As both step outside, the boy covered the girl with the shawl and went ahead. The girl was very happy and excited as after a long time, she got time to be with her companion. She lay rest head on his long arms, hold his hands and walked syn chronically forward. They were deeply engrossed in each other that they lost the essence of time and location.

They went ahead for a few miles before they reach the beach. Oh! the girl was very excited now.

Girl: WOW! BEACH. You always know how to impress me.

Boy: You are my heart beat. I will do anything to keep that smile on your radiant.

Girl: (Shyly) Offo!! You started to flirt again.

Boy: (Laughing loudly). Is it what you call flirting? I guess I am getting a hang of it. Be with me, so that I can become expert in the field of flirting.

Girl: Leave it. You will never get expert in this. Be.

Narrator: As the girl was speaking, the boy didn’t let her finish her sentence. He blindfolded the girl with his hand around her eyes.

Girl: What are you doing? I am not able to see anything.

Boy: Trust me. The next part is interesting.

Narrator: The boy took the girl is his arms and walked few miles. He then stopped at wooden plank. He lovingly placed the girl in the center of the wooden plank and made her sit in the middle of the plank. The girl was curious and excited at the same time.He slowly opened the eyes of the girl only to be disappointed seeing the darkness around and emptiness of the sea. The girl’s dismal reaction was very much evident on her face .The boy went few steps back.

Boy: (shouting) there is a candle underneath your chair. A match box is kept beside it. Light it and illuminate the thread on the other side of the chair.

Narrator: The girl obediently did what he asked her do. The view amazed her. Her face lit up with the most amazing smile. Her face became radiant as the infant babe.

As she lit the thread with the candle, the thread burnt easily and following the route it supposed to take. It illuminated the series of scented candles, scents of lavender and rose. The scents which the girl love very much. The candles burned and she was surrounded by the candles. She noticed that the candles were kept in sequence forming a shape. As she closely noticed, she recognized that she was standing in the middle of the heart. She was speechless by this gesture. The boy stood there loving every moment of it yet never dared to come close to the girl. He thought that the moment is of the girl and he shouldn’t ruin it. He then directed the girl to the tip of the heart. The girl was very excited now. She went to the side and was accompanied by the boy. As a chivalrous gesture, he took the girl and guided her to a basket.

Girl: I like the surprise. You are the best. You are different.

Boy: Sshh! Wait for the final surprise.

Narrator: A blast of hot gas was blown as the boy turn the knob of something. The girl was confused. After a few minutes, the girl was able to decipher that she was sitting on a hot air balloon. The balloon rose up and flew in the high skies with the crimson moon. The girl couldn’t take her eyes of the scene. She was flying high in the middle of the crimson moon sky. The Warmness of hot air balloon and the care of the boy in the midst of the cool air of the sea and they are flying in the horizon of water and sky.

Boy: A place I choose for you where you can be YOURSELF and never be hurt again……

Narrator: The boy left the place leaving the smile on the girl’s face. He loved her but He chose her happiness of being solitude at the most beautiful place than being part of the point and being a baggage.
